Bandits in Katsina state have killed a businessman, Mallam Garba Gardi Funtua, after he paid a N2 million ransom for the release of his abducted daughter.

The incident began last month when bandits kidnapped his daughter from the Federal University Dutsin-Ma. After Garba paid the ransom, the bandits released his daughter but held him captive, demanding an additional N5 million.

Garba was held captive for 18 days before his family learned on Sunday, August 4, that he had been killed 17 days earlier.

His son, Funtua, confirmed the tragic news in a Facebook post, stating:

"It is with total submission to the will of Allah (SWT) that I announce the death of my father Alh. Abubakar Garba Gardi Funtua. He was killed by the bandits that kidnapped my sister last month. Jana’iza holds tomorrow 5/08/2024 at his residence in Gangaren Tasaulawa, Funtua by 9 am, inshaAllah. Please pray for his soul."

The community mourns the loss of Garba, who fell victim to the rising insecurity plaguing the region.
